The “Sacramento Whats?”
As we all await the choice of the people in the United Football League’s second “name the team” contest of 2010, there are some possibilities that work better than others.
While the list of league-generated choices for Sacramento is a better one than for Hartford, there isn’t a clear-cut No. 1.
Redwoods? Done already.
Sting? Simplistic.
Miners? Half-way done already (see Canadian Football League Gold Miners).
Condors? Nah.
Senators? Nope.
Pioneers? Nada.
So, if the best choice isn’t one of the six the league provided, then what is?
An interesting idea that caught my eye was from “Brian in Boston” on the boards – “Steelheads“. The name of a former independent baseball team in Sacramento, the Steelheads are an intriguing choice due to the abundance of steelheads, or rainbow trout, in the Sacramento area.
It also is one of the choices advocated for by Sacramento Bee sports writer Matt Barrows, and any names put out by writers who give the UFL fair coverage should be considered.
The other name which would add a little “ummph” to the Sacramento franchise would be “Swarm.” How is this different from “Sting,” you ask? Well, “Swarm” is a little more ferocious than “Sting,” and it has both a tie to football (i.e. a “swarming defense”) and Hornet Stadium.
“Slappy967” from the boards suggested “Swarm,” and it’s a strong suggestion.
The write-in choice “Colonials” won the Hartford contest, and it’s entirely possible a well-thought-out write-in name like “Steelheads” or “Swarm” could do the same thing in the Sacramento contest.

No way dude! The Condors without a doubt is the strongest name out there! I cannot think of a better name than The Condors. I am just shocked that the name has not been used by any other pro football team. Think of the Cardinals, Eagles, Seahawks, Ravens. It ranks up there with all of them, if not better than some of them. It is a safe, innovative name to use. It also rolls nice, Sacramento Condors.
GO TUSKERS!!!
p.s. this is floridatuskerfan just using my sons computer. He is Tuskerdude.
Sacramento Steelheads… does’nt exactly roll off the tongue but It is a little better than the list w/ the exception of the Condors IMO. The logo possibilities are great.
The Swarm??? For Sacramento? and to play off the stadium??? It’s a bit lame to me. I’d rather team up w/ “Roccano” from the boards and go w/ thr Rivermen… Seriously.
Stags or Stallions might be cool
I’m really starting to like it.
Sacramento Steelheads.. I could see the possibilities, also has a UFL uniqueness.
The name should have some significance to the area. The bear on the California flag, the original flag, was a Grizzly. The original bear flag was flown over Sutter’s Fort during the short ‘Bear Flag Revolt’ of 1846. It was the beginning of the California Republic. Sacramento is home to Sutter’s Fort, and, of course is our state capital.
So how about the, ‘Grizzlies’
