I know it is now a day or two past 2009 but I thought now was as good a time as any to look back over the wild ride that was 2009 for the UFL. 2010 will be a big year for the United Football League – two new teams, a local presence, expanded media and marketing efforts, and more games will hopefully conspire to produce a successful second season. Before the announcements and the true off season begin, however, let’s look back at the top nine moments of 2009.
Shortly ago, Mike Florio of Profootballtalk reported that J.P. Losman had agreed to sign with the NFL’s Oakland Raiders, with Losman visiting Oakland today for a physical. PFT was told that Losman’s stint with the United Football League’s Las Vegas Locomotives under the direction of coach Jim Fassel was the impetus behind Oakland’s move. The Las Vegas Locomotives won the first championship of the United Football League Friday with a 20-17 overtime defeat of the Florida Tuskers before 14,801 at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
Locos running back DeDe Dorsey, who scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to force overtime, was named the game’s Title Sports Drink Most Valuable Player. Las Vegas kicker Graham Gano drilled a 33-yard field goal in overtime for the win, igniting a spirited celebration on the Locos’ sideline and among their home fans in the stands.
Las Vegas Locomotives runningback DeDe Dorsey has been proving why he is among the league’s elite all season, and the Locos player seized the opportunity to really shine in this afternoon’s thrilling UFL Championship game, averaging 6.0 yards on 11 carries and leading his team to an overtime 20-17 Locomotives victory.
