14,292 fans showed up in Las Vegas last night to watch William Hambrecht’s dream come to life. For more than twenty years Hambrecht has been dreaming of launching another football league following his experience with the United States Football League in the early 80s. He had been actively working on the project for several years and despite a poor economy he managed to make his dream a reality.

The United Football League announced on June 8th, 2009 that William “Bill” Mayer would be the lead investor in the New York UFL ownership group. Mayer is a New York City local and is the Senior Partner of Park Avenue Equity. Park Avenue has invested nearly $400,000,000 in various ventures. He serves, or has served, on several corporate boards. He has connections to Blackrock Kelso Capital which manages in excess of $1 billion. Mr. Mayer is also a trustee of Columbia Mutual Funds.

At a press conference today, UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue announced William E. Mayer, founder of Park Avenue Equity, as the League’s newest investor and owner of the UFL’s New York franchise. New York Head Coach Ted Cottrell was also in attendance at the press event to welcome Mayer.

The United Football League had a banner day today, formally announcing their first head coach and the site of the first ever UFL game on October 8, 2009. It has long been said that start up leagues have two chances to make a good impression. The first being the day of their announcement, the second being the inaugural game. From every indication the first day should leave a positive impression on football fans.
