Stewart in UFL

Brian Stewart had planned on sitting out this season. The former Cowboys defensive coordinator was going to go to NFL training camps and games, watch videos and learn all he could before trying to get back in the league in 2010.

But then Dennis Green called.

Green is the new coach of the San Francisco franchise in the United Football League, which debuts a four-team, six-game schedule in October. Stewart now is Green’s defensive coordinator in San Francisco.

The UFL will take players cut by NFL teams, hoping to convince the young ones not to stay on NFL practice squads.

"I’d rather be coaching than sitting out," Stewart said in a telephone interview. "I would say that a million times. ... I’m pretty excited about the opportunity."

The Cowboys ranked in the top 10 in total defense in each of the past two seasons, but Wade Phillips took over play-calling duties after a 34-14 loss to the Rams last season. Stewart was fired after the season.

Several colleges showed interest in Stewart, but he said he would only consider a head coaching job or a defensive coordinator position in college football. He hopes to return to the NFL as a coordinator, but he knows his next opportunity in the NFL might be as a position coach.

"I’m still trying to get myself in a position where I feel good about myself and other people feel good about me, so I can [get] back in the NFL as a coordinator," Stewart said. "That would the ultimate goal — to get back in the NFL as a coordinator."
