View Full Version : Do you approve of the Las Vegas team name Locomotives?
I am surprised no one has done this one yet.

That was the only name that I had trouble with. After 24 hours, it already has grown on me.
This turned out to be a great name as well.
It doesn't appeal to me at all. It is not a very strong nickname, and I don't think people often associate Las Vegas with locomotives any more than most other major cities.

I had to say "No"' as there are too many other strong names for a LV team. Here are the blue and copper team colors.

It doesn't flow well in my opinion.

Just thought that as well. The Las Vegas Loco-motives. It just doesn't flow.
Then just call them the Las Vegas Locos. I guess I like, but I will reserve full judgement on it until I see logos/uniforms.

I really dislike this name. They tried to hard on this one (if this is in fact the name...). Vegas is a town built on gambling, we're not ashamed of that...

Thanks Nation, cause "Locomotives quarterback J.P. Losman" would not sound right on a broadcast.

This begs the question, if they STILL have all these names in play, then do they have mockups of logos for all of these names? I mean, they are revealing the names/logos next week right?
Many people on this board have said that branding a team with a logo can take up to a year, so this doesn't make sense that with one week before a press conference they don't know what the teams name is going to be..
I don't know, it strikes me as odd.

All photos are courtesy of All Pro Football 2K8. A great football game for the Xbox 360 and PS3. Cheap copies can be found in any videogame store.
Looking at those photos, I'd have been better off leaving a logo off the helmet entirely as we'll be seeing them that way at first anyway.
BTW, I'm just presenting examples of possible uniforms and colors for the teams. Hopefully the real ones are just as good or better.

I had a feeling there would be some dumb names that have nothing to do with their market. Of course Vegas would end up as exhibit A. But whatever. I can get used to it if that's all they have.

I'm on the fence when it comes to this team name. On the one hand, I can see that they were trying to avoid going with an all-too-obvious, overdone gambling reference, and - in doing so - opted to play off of the fact that Las Vegas was founded in 1905 on land purchased from the San Pedro, Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad. In fact, for years Las Vegas was an important stop on said railway's route.
That said, it is a mouthful. I suppose it can be shortened to Las Vegas Locos by fans, but that sounds a bit "minor-league". It also strikes me as having a generic, "Wild West"-themed feel to it.

A great number of western towns/cities have roots that go back to the early railroad routes. The connection for Las Vegas to trains is buried well in the past at this point.
So, what about Las Vegas Greyhounds? The most transient population in the nation, dog betting is a form of gambling, and it flows okay.
Not a lot better than Locomotives, but the UFL doesn't seem to want to use the cooler names like "Wild Cards", "Scorpions" or "Desperados".

At this point "UFL West" is a better name.
Atleast they have J.P. Lossman as Conductor...err.... Quarterback. I wanted to like the team just because of him but now i just can't!

I am positive that Las Vegas is not derailed by a nickname. In fact they will remain one of, if not the, highest supported team.

Just practicing my puns, Nation!
In fact, as complete neutral, Las Vegas might well be the team I end up supporting because of the strange nickname. Provided the colour scheme and logo are good.
And as long as I can follow the games on webcast, at least...

in the process.....
I am so very disappointed at the team name.
How generic can you get! Most any major city was founded because of a port, (ocean, major river, etc.) or a railroad stop.
Nothing in the name associates with Las Vegas anymore than hundreds of other cities across the U.S.
Major fumble here, branding is all too important in any business, especially one that can generate revenues off of logos.
Wow, am I bummed!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be a hater. But I am a realist.
Sure the few hardcore fans will rally around the team win or lose, but the masses will not support or follow the team unless there is a 'hook' to get them involved. The XFL had a gimic and Las Vegas did rather well on attendance.
With only two home games within 7 days of each other, the support will not be there. The few curious ones will long forget about the team by Thanksgiving. How can you possibly draw fans with only two home games? You'd have to give away most of your tickets to the first game just to get people there.
I'm saying right now that the games will have less than 4,000 paid tickets and less than 7,500 total in attendence at each of the two games.

i wouldn't be surprised if you are right. But the whole point of the first year is to get more cities involved, so they can expand, then LV will settle down at their home field for the future
its a tough gig, and being a realist will show how hard it is to get people in seats if its not the nfl or ncaa

Actually LV was founded on the railroad.
Jet8282,
Don't want to beat a dead horse here, but what I said was that hundreds of cities in the U.S. were founded on the railroad stops.
To get technical, it wasn't 'founded' by the railroad. Vegas was on maps a full sixty years before the railroad was built in 1905. It was known as an oasis in the desert even longer. It just became an incorporated city in 1905 once the rail stop was built.
Being a 'railroad' town is anything but unique to Las Vegas.
Enough of this, I'm putting away my negative hat and hoping that this league is a sucuss. The realist in me isn't going to too supportive though...

This team is never gonna go by the Locomotives so who cares if its a bad fit or not. IMO Fans are gonna call them the Locos. It will look really good on the jerseys and t shirts etc. Gotta love it. Great job UFL.

I didn't like it at first. But my wife said instantly, "It's cool because they'll just be Locos". And yeah, that is pretty cool. I was hoping for something that reflected the city. (the railroad story is sweet but lame) But Locos totally works so I'm fine with it.

I prefer the Locomotives/Locomotion for a Sacramento-based team for its historical ties.
I really like Las Vegas Roadhogs as a concept: logo of hairy boars on classic Harley-Davidson Dyna low riders, wearing leather caps (w/ straps hanging), goggles, and carrying a pigskin in one hand.
Unfortunately, the "huskers" stole my thunder, as far as the pig theme goes.

You have to rembember that this is also Sacramentos team, the only reason they are using the Vegas name is because it is a bigger market, so the name should fit in with the two cities. Plus if it goes either way LOCOS means crazy, which vegas is crazy and sacramento is wll known for their railroads.
