Jay Gruden is emerging as the frontrunner for head coach of the Florida Tuskers in the eyes of many following the United Football League. The Orlando Sentinel weighed in on the Tuskers’ vacancy the other day after speaking with UFL Commissioner Michael Huyghue who alerted the Sentinel that Gruden was definitely a candidate.
Haslett’s hiring opens up the Tuskers’ head coaching position.
The United Football League is in preparation for its second season which kicks-off in September with a 10 week regular-season schedule and two expansion teams. Announcements will be made regarding the expansion cities, the head coaches for those teams as well as the Florida Tuskers and additional investors in the next two months. Since November 24th, 27 players have been signed to NFL teams’ active roster(s) and/or practice squad(s). (Image, left, courtesy the UFL.)
Yesterday we reported on the probability, but today it is official. Jim Haslett has waved goodbye to the United Football League after one season and joined the Washington Redskins of the NFL, acting as defensive coordinator under Mike Shanahan. Haslett is expected to bring the 3-4 defense to the ‘Skins, a package he became more than familiar with during his time as a defensive coordinator with the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1990s. With recent reports out of NFL.com suggesting the Bengals are “very confident” in their ability to retain Mike Zimmer, Jason Reid with The Washington Post believes that Jim Haslett is now the front-runner for the defensive coordinator position with the Washington Redskins, following reports from Comcast Sportsnet that Haslett was at Redskins Park on Monday. Dusty Sloan looks into his crystal ball to see who could end up coaching in the UFL in 2010. Assuming Dennis Green (California) and Jim Fassel (Las Vegas) return to their 2009 posts, and assuming Ted Cottrell (perhaps not retained by the New York franchise, which could relocate to Hartford per press reports) and Jim Haslett (possibly leaving Florida for the National Football League’s Washington Redskins) don’t come back, there would be four new UFL head coaches for 2010. Who might they be?
Is Jim Haslett plotting a return to the UFL for year two?
The rumor mill is buzzing with news that Florida Tuskers Head Coach Jim Haslett could be pursued by the Buffalo Bills for their coaching vacancy.
