…and so we have the Sacramento (Fill in the blank)s in 2010.
United Football League Commissioner Michael Huyghue, team owner Paul Pelosi, General Manager/Head Coach Dennis Green were welcomed to California’s capital city by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson in a press conference Wednesday afternoon at the Citizen Hotel in downtown Sacramento.
With over 100 media, city officials and fans filling the room, it was announced that the California Redwoods, who played their games in the San Francisco Bay area last season, will relocate to Sacramento for the 2010 season. Gone are the California Redwoods, but UFL officials invite fans to “NAME YOUR TEAM” on the official league Web site, www.UFL-football.com, to take part in the contest.
As stated by the commissioner, five home games will by played at Sacramento State University. As we speak, Hornet Stadium is being prepped for the installation of the $500,000 artificial turf that could have only been accomplished with the assistance of the new Sacramento franchise.
September 1 will mark the first day for the new franchise in Sacramento. When the first home game rolls around, Huyghue stated that he wanted the 22,000 Hornet Stadium seats filled.
The Sacramento franchise will be adding many jobs to the community, as well as assisting the Sacramento economy on and off the field. Not only will UFL football be affordable for friends and families, but also local schools will be able to keep some proceeds of their own ticket sales for the games.
Many professional football teams have come and gone in the Sacramento region. With the Sacramento Surge and Sacramento Gold Miners long gone, only time will tell if the Sacramento Whatchyamacalits will survive the test of time in the era of expansions and relocations.
