Instant Analysis: Redwoods to Sacramento Rumor

For those of you who couldn’t wait any longer for some United Football League off-season news, Tuesday’s edition of the Sacramento Bee was your much-needed tonic.

Matthew Barrows of the Bee reported Tuesday that the California Redwoods a) is “strongly considering” moving to Sacramento and playing at Hornet Stadium and b) that the UFL is expected to change the team’s nickname.

It is not known whether the team would keep its “California” moniker, or go to “Sacramento.” But it is fun to speculate what the team’s new name might be – Capitals, Rivermen and Gold quickly come to mind.

The Bee’s reporting of the California team having two new local minority owners is good news not only because the league will have new money coming in from more than just the two expansion teams, but it also shows the UFL’s commitment to staying in Sacramento long-term.

Hornet Stadium was the home of the World League of American Football’s Sacramento Surge for its second season in 1992, and the Surge’s cousin, the Canadian Football League’s Sacramento Gold Miners, in 1993 and 1994. It primarily has been the home of Sacramento State’s football program since 1969.

Not shockingly, the Bee story also reported the New York Sentinels “likely” will relocate to Hartford, Conn., continuing the UFL’s move to becoming the “National Football League for non-NFL markets.”

This story is just the tip of the iceberg for UFL news in the coming months. Once the Super Bowl is played Feb. 7, UFL news should come at league fans like a tidal wave.

  1. give the sents one more year. at least give them a primary venue before judging their attendance problems. a last second move from citi field to out in the middle of nowhere (central long island) screwed their attendance. they had a 10K crowd at giants stadium. if they played another game near (or at) giants stadium and actually promoted it, the thought of relocation wouldnt be thought of.

  2. yah, i agree. The Sentinels need to play in larger venues, like Citi Field and Yankee Stadium.

  4. How did Hartford prove they deserve a UFL team? They couldn’t even give tickets away to UConn students for a game at their own home stadium!
