Northland Investment Behind Hartford; Citi Field a No-Go for NY?
This morning we’ve got two late running reports from the prior evening on two of the franchises Commissioner Michael Huyghue let drop should be gaining entry into the United Football League. First, Northland Investment Corporation may end up as the force behind the Hartford, CT franchise, reports Courant.com, and Rentschler Field may be the venue. Northland spokesman Chuck Coursey confirmed to the site that they have underwent negotiations with the UFL, but refrained from further elaboration, aside from the following company statement:
We are excited about the new league’s prospects and will continue to explore Northland’s potential involvement in the UFL. It is not certain whether the franchise will be Hartford based and it is entirely premature to state that the team will be playing at Rentschler Field.     Â
Other word courtesy of the New York Daily News strongly suggests Citi Field will not play host to league play, despite Peter King’s recent SI.com report. Additionally, Fred and Jeff Wilpon will reportedly pass on owning a UFL franchise altogether. From the NY Daily News:
Commissioner Michael Huyghue, a former senior VP with the Jacksonville Jaguars, had identified the Wilpons as being on board with the league in an SI.com report. A Mets official suggested the dimensions of Citi Field would allow for pro football, but they weren’t interested in compromising the Mets’ field conditions in a league that may have regular season games as early as August.     Â
To wrap up, that’s promising news for the Hartford folks and a confusing mess for those football fans of the City that Never Sleeps. Pertaining to the latter, which report resonates the most - Peter King’s Sports Illustrated affair or the blurb from Daily News sports writer Adam Rubin? Sound off in the forums. there’s obviously still gonna be a NY team, right? if anything, they can play at the meadowlands, it’s worked for the Jets and Giants.
I think that Hartford will sign lease soon. Hartford will be staying for long time.
I’m not surprised at the New York situation. I’m sure that the Mets are relieved that Citi Field will not field a football team while (possibly) they’re in the middle of the playoff chase. As for Hartford, good move. It could serve as an alternative for fans who can’t afford to drive to Boston to see the Patriots.
