UFL Stands Alone in New Alternative League Market as AAFL Folds?
Here at Access we can’t say we didn’t see this coming, but it’s breaking today that the All-American Football League is in dire straits and relying on a new majority owner to bail the league out so that they may still perform kickoff in 2008 as planned, or push back to 2009. We have clear reason to believe that the search for a new majority owner has been in place for some time now, however, and that not even the Fairy Godmother could help the AAFL now.
While nothing is official until the  AAFL makes it so, the writing’s on the wall and the United Football League looks to stand alone in the alternative league challengers circle. While this may bode well for the UFL from a competition standpoint, we can’t help but feel for the players, coaches and various staff who have been locked in with the AAFL for some time and are just looking to play some good ‘ole American football. Barring this Hail Mary pass by Marcus Katz turning into a miracle, our condolences go out to those fine people.
Good luck to the UFL going forward - it looks like the field just got a little slimmer.
Update: The official AAFL website has now been updated with a desperation message that an Access poster first floated around our forums earlier today. The message asks for fresh financing via a new majority owner, as we mentioned above, which will in turn “salvage the ‘08 season”.  This same release has been sent through email to various fans and prospective investors in the league.
