All Eyes on Hartford and the United Football League

Tomorrow night Hartford, Connecticut plays host to their first United Football League game as the Florida Tuskers and New York Sentinels take on one another at Rentschler Field. A few quick hits on Hartford:

  • The Greater Hartford Metro Area plays host to almost 1.2 million residents, making it the #45 largest market in the country.
  • Many of the world’s insurance companies have headquarters in the city, bringing lots of capital and sponsor opportunities to the table.
  • As recently as 2004 the market ranked 2nd in the country for economic activity.
  • The population of the city skews younger than many major cities in the country according to demographic reports.
  • Major companies such as Aetna and Cigna call Hartford home.
  • Hartford hasn’t had a major league team since the Hartford Whalers of the NHL moved to North Carolina.

The game will be played at Rentschler Field, home of UConn football. The stadium seats 40,000 and opened in 2003. Rentschler Field is the likely home of the future UFL team many expect to begin play in 2010.

Hartford was originally going to be the site of a team in the inaugural year. Reports indicate that the city has an ownership group in place for the team.
