Tonight at 7 PM the Florida Tuskers will take on the New York Sentinels in the Citrus Bowl. It will be the second game of the United Football League season and the second game in the history of the United Football League. The Tuskers are 4 point favorites and the preseason favorite to win The Championship Game in November.
The Tuskers bring a star studded roster to the game. Brooks Bollinger will lead the Tuskers offense with his veteran presence. Tatum Bell, Michael Pittman, and Shaud Williams will bring in a balanced running game while Chas Gessner and others bring forward a talented receiver corps.
Oh, and look out for Jayson Foster who has the nickname “Wildcat” with all that nickname implies.
Look for the Tuskers to bring forward a defense led by Odell Thurman, the talented linebacker, and Dexter Jackson, former Super Bowl MVP, at Safety.
The New York Sentinels are led by Quinn Gray at quarterback, a man who has always been touted as a potential NFL starter who never received the chance. The Sentinels have a talented group of running backs including Cecil Sapp and Chris Barclay. The wide receiving group is led by Koren Robinson, the talented but troubled former first round pick.
Simeon Rice, future Hall of Famer, is the undisputed leader of the New York defense.
The two teams should bring a competitive game to the fans of Orlando. We will see how many fans show up tonight as the game is scheduled up against LSU versus Florida, a religious experience in Florida. The league anticipates a good crowd, roughly in line with the 14,000 in attendance at the Las Vegas game.
The local Orlando Sentinel had a preview in today’s paper where they wrote:
One thing Citrus Bowl fans will definitely see in their game are more name-recognition players, starting with New York defensive end Simeon Rice, the former Tampa Bay Buccaneer who still ranks 13th in NFL history with 122 sacks. Rice, 33, has been out of football since a 2007 shoulder injury.
“This league has given me a chance to put on a helmet and do my thing,” Rice said. “I can’t wait.”
Neither can Tuskers like safety and Super Bowl XXXVII Most Valuable Player Dexter Jackson, formerly of Tampa Bay, or Tatum Bell, a former 1,000-yard rusher in the NFL. Bell will share carries with Michael Pittman, who won a championship in Tampa with both Rice and Jackson.
“It’s going to be exciting,” Florida quarterback Brooks Bollinger said. “There are a lot of guys from all different situations and a lot of different career paths, but the one thing is that we’re all here because we want to play.”
The question: Do fans want to watch?
The UFL can’t control how fans embrace the game.
They can, however, control who’s playing it.
“We’re not going to make a mistake and give them bad football. That’s not going to be the reason we don’t stick around,” Mueller said. “What you saw [in Vegas], we can build on that.”
