Fresh Investors Change Course of UFL

UFL Access readers almost didn’t get their wish, but in the end the league delivered.

While a vast majority of the readership here indicated via our forums and polls that they desired legitimate team names for the Premiere Season of the United Football League (and not UFL East, West, etc.), the league’s teams almost went nameless for year one, according to an article from SFWeekly.com. Individual ownership groups were apparently a hurdle that would have axed the possibility of team names in year one, a hurdle that was overcome last month. Now each individual team will have a nickname which will be announced in July and a logo which will be unveiled in September.

We checked in with the league with regards to the article and a United Football League spokesperson told us, “We will unveil new investors in the coming weeks. We were fully funded from the beginning but we have added to our investor pool.”

The piece today also revealed some other golden nuggets. Team logos would have consisted of just the UFL logo in different color combinations had regional naming occurred. “Until we had real owners for each team, we didn’t want to have names for the teams before an owner came on board. So now we have owners on board,” said Vuono, speaking with SFWeekly.

A regional plan that has made the cut is the idea to specifically stock teams with players from the region – for example, East coast teams will feature players that were cut from Eastern Seaboard-based NFL teams, etc. This is a wise move that will surely help mobilize fan interest.

Also, $4 million smackaroos are allocated for each team, so each player will average about $80,000 for the six game season. Sixty players will receive invites for each training camp.

UFL Access will have coaching news soon, so stick with us in the coming days.
