Future UFL Expansion: 2010 Edition (AKA: Euro Edition)

With Omaha and San Antonio coming soon, it will be interesting to see where the next expansion teams will be held.   I could see New York returning in the future if the UFL is at a point where they make enough profits to cover the losses of a NYC team.  Other than New York, I don’t see the league going into NFL Markets as a good idea. The Redwoods will likely relocate to Sacramento.

As for possible expansion cities?  In the United States, there is Louisville, Portland, Columbus, Salt Lake City, Raleigh, Milwaukee (among others).  As for International expansion?  Well, Canada and Mexico are out (Canada due to the CFL and Mexico due to the insane crime rate), so it would have to be Europe.  Germany, Spain, France, Italy and the UK seem to be prime for UFL teams.   Having major cities such as London, Berlin, Barcelona, Frankfurt, Madrid, Paris and Rome in the UFL is as good (if not better than) having New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.  Except for New York, none of those other cities are needed.

Having the major cities in Europe such as London, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Barcelona and probably Milan prevents the UFL from being called “minor league” because those are major cities.  Most of the cities I mentioned, while good for the UFL, would not end the perception of the UFL being “minor league.”  For me, the UFL being major league is not about the talent, but about where the teams are located.

Having teams in Europe (and not just have like one team in England and like 5 teams in Germany like NFL Europa) would be good for the UFL, probably even better than American cities.

I am in favor of Euro expansion, provided that it’s not like NFL Europa.

As for American expansion, those cities I’ve mentioned before would be good options, but also look out for NFL cities such as Jacksonville, Oakland, San Diego and Buffalo.

  1. I would think Salt Lake City and Portland are the two most likely cities to get the next UFL franchises…UNLESS Jacksonville loses the Jaguars to Los Angeles. Then I would move them to the top of the list as a good natural rival for Orlando/Florida.

    • Portland would be a Great city for a UFL team, it should have gotten a team in the first season. The only problem with having teams in Europe is that there would be too much seperation between the American teams and European teams, it would almost be like having two leagues. I think for now they should stay in the states mabey expand to Puerto Rico , somwhere close to the US and mabey in 5-10 years put a few teams in England, Germany and Spain , just see how they work out and mabey expand further if they do well

  2. I would not be so quick to count out Monterrey, Mexico. It is a relatively low crime area, is home to many large corporations and, most importantly, boasts a well-off population that is crazy for American Football.

  3. I think the UFL should add a few more teams in the USA before going international. Portland, Salt Lake City, Milwaukee, and Raleigh-Durham are all good choices for next year.

  5. Memphis and Birmingham should be in. they were very good franchises in USFL and WFL. When WFL fold, they had chance to join NFL but their case failed. Memphis need mew stadium to get UFL franchise. Birmingham will have new stadium so they will get in. Other potenial are Oklahoma city, and Honolulu

  6. I don’t know what this obsession with adding foreign markets is?
Somehow adding London will make the UFL “Major League”?
    This is absurd!
Last time I checked Soccer is the most popular sport in the world.
I don’t fathom that too much advertising money will come from being abroad.
Why not contimue to concentrate on where Football has made it’s mark….the USA.
Let’s quit trying to be international and concentrate on building a viable, entertaining, quality brand of alternative football.
NFL Europe failed for a reason….they just don’t get American football!
Plus, logistically it is a traveling secretaries nightmare!
Get out of fantasy land and put attention where the real $$$$ are and that is “underserved NFL markets”.
I pray the UFL and their “marketing braintrust” are listening.

  7. the ufl should do what the cfl did and start a different conference, but with euro teams. it would save money if theyre serious about expanding to europe.
