Sunday night I had a chance to speak with Tuskers TE Jermaine Wiggins who is quickly getting ready for kickoff come Saturday. Wiggins said he was ready to practice and prepare to a do a lot of media this week telling us that, “This week you will see us on ESPN.com. I’m doing some radio hits Monday and Tuesday we’re doing some other events as we try to get the word out.”
“Bits and pieces, as we get closer to kickoff, I have seen more and more. I saw a commercial on television and I’ve seen a few billboards driving around. You see fans out and about – and we let fans know to come on down. The media is also bumping up this week,” said Wiggins.
He mentioned that practice had been going well and that the team had been becoming more and more cohesive. He spoke warmly of Brooks Bollinger, refering to him as a smart quarterback who knows the game of football.
Referencing some of the other weapons in the offense Wiggins said that, “Jayson has been doing a good job. He’s quick, making plays all training camp. He brings a lot to the table. Taye Biddle has been sharp as well and the team is coming together.”
Jay Gruden will mix it up offensively this season according to Wiggins. He mentioned that Gruden was fond of creativity and that he was great at taking input from our players.
When asked about game week finally coming to the UFL Wiggins said, “It’s going to be exciting to be out there Saturday night. I am planning on watching Las Vegas and California playing on Thursday – hoping for good turnout and a good media reaction leading into our game. I’m hoping for people to come out and whoever comes out will see great football. They won’t leave the stadium disappointed, that’s for sure. We’re going to do what we have always done, just play football. Fans are going to grab on to this league.”
The UFL is expected to have a series of announcements and media pieces coming out in the days to come as the league prepares for kickoff on Thursday.
In reference to the inaugural season Wiggins told me that, “2009 is a learning year for the league, we’re going to be learning as we go. 2010 will really be a dramatic rollout, we’re going to eliminate the mistakes that we make this year. We’re going to go out there and put on a good product. Week to week I expect to see us grow because people are going to realize this is good football. The fans will get great football, just for a lesser price. It’s a work in progress but the UFL will grow.”

Good stuff!
