Tuesday, 10:40 PM Las Vegas time
This morning at 4:30 AM Eastern time my wife and I hopped in the car and headed to the airport for our flight to Las Vegas, a trip that went smoothly minus a screaming child who kicked my seat for the better part of the five hour flight. Arriving in Las Vegas is unlike arriving at any other airport in the world – after all, where else can you step off the plane and immediately start playing slot machines?
On the cab ride over to the Luxor we caught a glimpse of the progress that the UFL has made in penetrating the Las Vegas market. Our cabbie had played college ball for UNLV several decades ago and remained a football lover at heart. When I mentioned that we were in Vegas for the UFL Championship Game he didn’t ask, “what’s that”, he just mentioned that he had heard the game was coming up on the 27th and that he might try to make it over to Sam Boyd.
Positive progress, my friends, that’s the important thing with a new league.
I’ll spare you the stories of the casinos, the buffet, the Burger Bar, and my gambling winnings – or at least save them for a slow news week in the offseason – but suffice to say, I am extremely pleased with the UFL’s choice of Las Vegas as the home for the Championship Game. This is a city that lends itself to spectacle and big events.
Sunday, the various teams and league officials visited area hospitals as part of the league’s charitable outreach. Monday, practices for the two teams were open to the local media. On each and every day the league has had people fanning out over the city promoting the game and getting Sam Boyd ready for the big game on Friday.
Tomorrow, however, is the big kickoff for the Championship Game as Commissioner Michael Huyghue will give his State of the League Address and hold a press conference beginning at 11 AM Local (PST)/2 PM EST. Immediately following the Commissioner’s address the Tuskers and Locos will be made available to the media for a traditional media day. I will be livetweeting via the UFLAccess.com twitter which is located at: http://www.twitter.com/UFLAccess/
Follow along via Twitter beginning at 2 PM EST as we will provide any breaking news or quotes. Immediately following Media Day I will file a lengthier report, so stay tuned.
