Today it was announced that the California Redwoods would be moving to Sacramento and under a new name, which to me is a good thing as the UFL makes a move to have teams in non-NFL Markets. The team will play at Hornet Stadium. They become the second pro sports team in Sacramento, behind the NBA Kings. They may be the only pro sports team in Sacramento if the Kings don’t get a new arena in the next few years.
Hornet Stadium seats 22,000 which would be the right size for the UFL. I do recall from when the CFL Gold Miners played there that there were no built in restrooms and that there were portable restrooms, but with recent renovations I assumed that has changed.
Dennis Green will remain as head coach, and this time assume the role as Team General Manager. He coached at Stanford and was a disciple of the late Bill Walsh with the San Francisco 49ers. He also coached in the NFL with the Vikings and Cardinals. Of course every football fan remembers his “They are who we thought they were” rant when he was coach of the Cardinals. His son is ESPN NFL Expert Jeremy Green, a former Personnel man with the Browns. One of his former assistant coaches was Tony Dungy, who was his defensive coordinator in Minnesota.
The team has a new investor in Angelo Tsakopoulos, who is a prominent real estate director in Sacramento. He may not be as big of a name as The Maloof Brothers (owners of the Sacramento Kings), but he’s local, so that’s a good sign of the future of this league.
The move of the Former New York Sentinels to Hartford has already received good buzz for the UFL. Hopefully the same buzz will happen for Sacramento UFL (which will go under a new name).
I get a feeling that this team will do very well in Sacramento.
