The player once described by his college coach as the “Red Grange of defense” is reportedly close to a deal with the United Football League’s New York franchise. Multiple sources have indicated to UFLAccess.com that Simeon Rice and his agent are in advanced negotiations with the league. The UFL takes time to complete contracts as they do their due diligence so it is unknown when the deal will be finalized and announced.

Rice would be a big signing for the upstart league as he will bring a pedigree that includes a Super Bowl ring and three Pro Bowl appearances to Ted Cottrell’s defense.
He was the third overall pick out of college and recorded 12.5 sacks in his rookie season for the Arizona Cardinals. Traveling from Arizona to Tampa Bay he helped lead the Buccaneers defense in their Super Bowl winning season, a season that concluded with him narrowly being edged out in Super Bowl MVP voting.
After leaving the Buccaneers he signed with the Broncos where he was allegedly unhappy with his playing time and asked to be released. He had a quick sojourner with the Colts immediately following and since then has not been on an NFL roster.
Rice made it clear during this past off season that he felt he had gas left in the tank and wished to continue his football career. If the rumblings we’re hearing prove accurate his career will continue beginning on October 8th.
This news was accompanied by a newspaper report that indicated that former Broncos running back Tatum Bell could sign with the Orlando team – both tidbits indicative of the type of talent that the league continues to attract as they draw closer to kickoff.

As a Cardinals season ticket holder I enjoyed watching Rice play. But he may be one of the world’s biggest jerks. I hope his inability to get an NFL job has changed his attitude.
His classless comments after Pat Tillman’s death are basically unforgiveable.
