The first-ever United Football League championship game is set – Florida vs. Las Vegas. It should be a very entertaining game, and one that every professional football fan should thank their lucky stars is around to get the bad taste of the Detroit Lions and Oakland Raiders on Thanksgiving Day out of their mouths.
FLORIDA 24, NEW YORK 6
The good - One of the more impressive aspects of the Tuskers’ high-powered offense is how many pass targets they have. Ten different Florida players caught passes vs. the Sentinels, and the fewest number of players the Tuskers have had catch passes in a single game this season is eight.
The bad - If you can nitpick about something with Florida, it is that New York converted 4-of-5 fourth-down conversions, and that the Tuskers had given up just 1-of-6 fourth-down converts before Game No. 5.
The ugly - Try as they might, the Sents just can not run the football. New York had just 52 rushing yards against the Tuskers, and averaged just 2.3 yards per tote.
Las vegas 16, California 10
The good - If you’re looking for a UFL “special teams player of the year,” try Locos kicker Graham Gano. With 10 more points against the Redwoods, Gano has contributed 40 of Las Vegas’ 126 points this season.
The bad - Despite getting the title game berth-clinching victory, the Locos allowed 146 rushing yards and 333 total offensive yards to a Redwood team that hasn’t exactly lit up opposing defenses this season.
The ugly - California gained 195 yards on offense in its last three drives of the game. Those three drives ended in a field goal, a lost fumble and an interception.
The bottom line
While it is nice to know who will play in the UFL title game, it is a little disconcerting that we will have an inconsequential Week 7 of play. With both Florida and Las Vegas possibly sitting players for some of all of this week’s games, who knows what we’re going to see?
