Tuskers, Locos Look Relaxed, Confident Heading Into Championship Game

Tomorrow the Florida Tuskers and Las Vegas Locos will battle for the first ever Hambrecht Trophy. On Media Day both teams looked relaxed and confident. A common refrain from the players was that while this may not be the Super Bowl, this is still a Championship Game and that is something that they are all excited about.

As we walked on to the field of Sam Boyd Stadium the Locos were getting fitted for their (potential) championship rings. The players were laughing and joking around with one another. I asked WR Samie Parker if the Locos were intimidated by the undefeated Tuskers to which he replied, “Why would I be scared of them? They have to stop me.”

Locos RB DeDe Dorsey confirmed that his foot felt fine and that the Locos have a good game plan. Smiling he said, “We have something up our sleeves for them tomorrow.”

The Locos seemed a confident bunch. QB JP Losman said, “Our team is growing week in and week out. We’re improving our fundamentals and our confidence. I am disappointed we are already to the end of the season because I feel like we are just getting better and better.”

Losman is set to have surgery on his finger on Monday but doesn’t feel as if the finger is going to hamper him tomorrow.

Speaking of his WR corps Losman told me that, “David Kircus and the whole wide receiver corps are coming along great. They are close knit, you know. I was hard on those guys earlier in the year and we all had bad habits to break – but, you know, we’re in a groove now and I am confident going into tomorrow. Our offensive line is vastly improved so I should have more time to make my reads and hit the guys.”

Losman said, with a shake of his head, that the much debated blitzing rules went out the window a week or two ago. The defenses have been running more complex schemes over the course of the year and he feels as if the Tuskers will definitely blitz frequently tomorrow.

Jim Fassel cracked several jokes with the media. When asked what it would take to beat the Tuskers he replied, “score more points.” He discussed how great the experience had been from day one and that his players hadn’t given the staff any trouble. Commenting on the Championship Game being held in Vegas he said, “Nothing, at this point in my life, would hurt more than to see someone else playing in this game in our home town.”

Brooks Bollinger appeared to be all business on Wednesday commenting that the Locos “are a good football team, a really good one, and we’re going to bring our A game on Friday.”

Kicker Matt Bryant said that, “Everyone is excited. It’s going to be a tough game, it’s difficult to beat someone three times in a row. We have a great coaching staff, Jim Haslett is a players coach and we feel like he will give us the right game plan to win.”

TE Jermaine Wiggins discussed how ready the Tuskers are for this game, again reiterating that a championship is a championship and that playing in such games are the very reason that you play sports in the first place. Wiggins went on to say that, “I’m feeling good and I’m ready to get out there and play. I want to get this game under our belt and leave our mark on history.”

In general the Tuskers seemed to be excited and ready to play. A few Tusker players said that they couldn’t wait to actually get their rings, although the Locos might have something to say about that.
