I am saying the glass if half full here because of past leagues that said "We Will Be Back Next Year."

The first was the USFL then the XFL and the AFL.

I really hope the UFL will be back next season but there is a lot of competition from sports this time of year. The NFL, College football and basketball, plus the NBA the NHL. The MLB World Series just ended and NASCAR is winding down.

GOOD NIGHT & GOOD LUCK
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

one more thing bout season 2: since there will now be 3 games per week, here should be the weekly schedule:

*Tuesday Night
*Friday Night
Rotation Night: Wed, Thurs, or Sat night

*Tuesdays and Fridays are the quietest nights in the NFL and NCAAF, so take advantage, score some ratings. i guess if they r confident enough they can add an extra tv carrier, maybe FSN.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

I think forward motion would be a bit too different from the NFL on an every play basis. The UFL doesn't want to be radically different in on the field game play/schemes like the CFL and Indoor/Arena football leagues are. The UFL wants players to get NFL opportunities, and if the rules are too different as far as how plays are physically ran, and scouts can't see how they would work in a NFL style offensive scheme, it will hurt that.

No touchbacks on kickoffs I think is a good idea (I assume a tackle in the endzone on a kickoff would be considered a safety?). That isn't a radical difference in game play, and would generate more excitement on every kickoff.

I would also like to see no kneeldown, this is another rule that hopefully could start in the UFL and maybe move to the NFL. It wouldn't be that kneeldowns are "illegal", but, you'd have the AFL-like rule, where if you are in the lead in the final two minutes of a half, if you don't gain positive yardage, the clock stops. Forces teams ahead at the end of the game to run "real" plays. If the players gets across the line of scrimage, great, the coach should tell him to get down IMMEDIATELY, but, it at least gives the defense a chance at a fumble or strip.

Your other two "suggestions" seem very silly, no offense. The XFL "scrum" for the ball wasn't bad I thought, although I always thought it should have been each player starts at opposite 25 or 30 yard lines, to get the ball sitting on the 50. When I heard about it, I thought it would be that way, and I was disappointed when I saw that they start on the same side of the field.

As far as expansion teams.... LA as you said seems like a no brainer, although they need to play in a stadium like the Home Depot center (25-30,000 seats). You can't play in the Rose Bowl or something like that and have those USFL looking crowds.

Detroit, despite having the crappy Lions, is a VERY depresed market right now, probably one of the 2-3 worst large cities financially now. Sending a sub-league pro football team there right now doesn't make much sense.

For a 6th team, which probably needs to be in the east to have balanced divisions if they want to go that route, although they could probably hold off on divisions until they get to 8 teams, I'd go with one of: Milwaukee, Birmingham, Hartford, or suburban Chicago (play at the Fire's MLS stadium). If no divisions as of yet, they could also consider Portland or Salt Lake City.
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

*new rules for 2010 (a must if you want to sell a new brand of football):

-no touchbacks on kickoffs; give the return men more of a challenge on returning
-college-ruled hashmarks; give the kickers a wider FG challenge, impress the NFL scouts
-no kneel downs; in the NFL, this play guarantees a win. winning shouldnt be easy in pro football, play all 60 minutes.
-forward motion offense; no real reason, just gives the UFL a 21st century approach!

*just suggestions
-instead of a coin toss, the visiting team's kicker must make a 40 yard FG from a spot chosen by the home team (ex. left hashmark on south side of the field); shows the difference between pro kickers and clutch kickers.
-a team winning by a margin of 21 or more in the second half must initiate its second string squad; give everyone the ball!

EXPANSION CITIES:
Los Angeles; NO BRAINER
Detroit; GET IN THE MIDWEST! DETROIT NEEDS A WINNING TEAM!
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)

Definitely positive news for the league, as well as the fans. I was particularly happy with the fact that it was cleared up that uniforms will be different from eachother next year. Happy about the expansion of the teams and schedule. Can't wait for '10, but there's a championship to be decided this year first!
Current score: 0 (to vote for this comment, please visit the site)
