Following last week’s barn burner between the Florida Tuskers and the Las Vegas Locos, many UFL fans hope to see a “trematch” in the Championship Game on Black Friday. For the Locos to get there, however, they need to win their remaining games to bounce back from a 1-2 beginning to the season.
Luckily for them they face the dismal New York Sentinels on Wednesday night at Hofstra. That’s right, Hofstra. Long Island will play host to the second New York-based UFL game in the shadow of another World Series game, unfortunately for the league.
The Sentinels
The Sentinels finally played a competitive game last Thursday against the California Redwoods. They had an opportunity to drive to tie the game before a poorly timed turnover.
Quinn Gray looked sharper last week, although improvement will be needed for the Sentinels to pull out a win. He will be missing Koren Robinson this week as Robinson was suspended indefinitely due to missing team meetings, a bad sign for a player trying to reignite his career. This will mean Craphonso Thorpe will face a bigger challenge on Wednesday evening as he is target one, two, and three for Gray.
One thing that could help the Sentinels would be to stick with the run for a bit longer. LaBrandon Toefield, Chris Barclay, and Cecil Sapp are talented backs and one of the troubling aspects of the Sentinels game plan thus far is that they have turned away from the run too early. Sticking with the run could help Gray.
The Sentinels defense has been stout and a true strong point for the struggling team. If Simeon Rice and the others can get enough pressure on JP Losman then they might be able to prevent the Locos offense from getting in a rhythm.
The Locos
The Locos looked like they might pull out a win against the dominant Florida Tuskers, before falling just short. Their ability to bounce back from a disappointing loss in a short time frame will be tested this week.
JP Losman looked considerably more comfortable last week, minus a poor throw to finish the game. His 60 yard bomb off of a trick play was something to behold, showcasing his arm strength and poise. If Losman more closely resembles that version of himself rather than the shaky Losman that we saw go up against the Tuskers then the Sentinels won’t even keep it close.
DeDe Dorsey looked dominant and should chew up significant chunks of yardage against the Sentinels’ D. Locos Coach Jim Fassel noted that Dorsey will receive more carries than nominal starter Marcel Shipp this week.
It was good for the Locos to have Andrae Thurman back last week. Between Thurman and TE Adam Bergen they should pick apart a soft Sentinels secondary.
The Locos D looked much better last week as well. Their front seven should find success this week. Wendell Bryant has played strongly, looking more like the former first rounder than the NFL bust. As long as the Locos secondary lives up to the ability of their front seven then they should have no problem containing the Sentinels anemic office.
The Result
After two competitive games last week, we are unlikely to see the same this week. Locos will win 28-10.
