UFLAccess.com Week in Review: Don’t Hand it to the Tuskers Quite Yet

Here’s a few words of caution for United Football League fans – don’t lock yourself into a prohibitive preseason favorite for the UFL championship.

It wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to say that the Florida Tuskers – with the likes of Michael Pittman, Koren Robinson, Odell Thurman, Todd Sauerbrun, Craig Nall, Jermaine Wiggins, etc. – are the favorite for now.

But here is an example of why fans handing the Tuskers the first-ever UFL title might not be a good idea. And it is applicable, because the talent level in the UFL is starting to look a lot like the late, great United States Football League.

In 1983, the USFL began with an overriding thought that the Chicago Blitz would run away with the fledgling league’s first-ever championship. There was good reason to think that way, given a) the Blitz’s coach was the legendary George Allen, and b) the Blitz had players such as veterans Greg Landry, Kevin Long, Stan White, Karl Lorch and Junior Ah You, and rookies Frank Minnifield, Trumaine Johnson and Tim Spencer.

The Blitz ended the regular season at 12-6, but lost its only playoff game in overtime to eventual runner-up Philadelphia.

Fast-forward 26 years. The Tuskers certainly have a lot of talent, but they aren’t alone. New York just added several NFL veterans late last week, and Las Vegas has stocked its team with plenty of veterans, too. California doesn’t look as good on paper, yet, but has the chance to become the most improved team in the UFL by season’s end.

Given the way rosters are changing as training camp progresses, the UFL might be like weather in Ohio – if you don’t like it, give it five minutes, and it very well will change.

  1. Well they just lost Koren Robinson. So their stock is dropping.
